Want to know the truth? I love to cook. What I don’t love is trying to dream up meals that are:
- Healthy but tasty
- Not too adventurous for our picky eater
- Won’t break the bank
- Quick and easy to prepare
That’s why I’ve been curious for a while about these meal-kits I keep hearing about–the ones where a box of ingredients for a pre-planned dinner shows up at your door, ready to go. Can it seriously be that easy? Does it cost a fortune? Will the environmentalist in me have a fit over the packaging?
But with dinnertime being a super stressor for me, I decided to try HelloFresh, which a friend told me is the best of the meal-kits for families.
What arrived at my door was 3 nights’ worth of dinner in 3 self-contained boxes with everything I needed inside. I have to tell you, there was something really exciting about unearthing our dinners with the kids huddled around. They wanted to know what was what, look at the recipe cards, and get involved when it was time to start cooking!
We picked our first meal, the Very Teriyaki Pork Tenderloin with Basmati Rice and Asparagus. Sounded promising, especially since my little ones actually eat these foods! The recipe card said it would take 30 minutes to prepare and was marked as Easy to prepare. As we unboxed the ingredients, I could see the produce was crisp, the meat was fresh, and care had gone into the packaging, which was largely biodegradable and recyclable. With my little helpers, I was able to get our meal from package to plate in just under 30 minutes with some simple prep work and assembling.
I’ve heard of other meal-kits having you chop up vegetables for hours, or slice and toast almonds for a time-consuming garnish that never gets eaten. This is not HelloFresh. The other meals in our package were equally easy to prepare, each a spin on an old favorite, like classic steak and potatoes, but with a zesty marinade. HelloFresh definitely does the basics best.
Plus, these boxes saved me on a couple of nights when we came in late from after-school activities. No stressing about what I could pull together at the last minute. No rummaging through the freezer, the fridge, and the pantry, frantically trying to dream up some oddball concoction for dinner. There were my HelloFresh meals, just waiting for me, with all the pre-measured ingredients and a recipe card in one place. Phew!
So how did we do on price? HelloFresh’s meals amount to less than $10 per person. Is it the cheapest way to prepare dinner? No, but there’s something important to be said for saving the time and energy you ordinarily spend on meal-planning and grocery-shopping. Anything is more fun than hauling a 40-pound grocery cart around the store with a screaming toddler!
Even if you just think of ordering HelloFresh a few times a month as a replacement to takeout nights. It ends up being more affordable than $40’s worth of pizza for a family of four, plus no guilt about eating junk.
